Secondary Fridge/Freezer Turn-in

Out with the old - and inefficient!

Does this sound familiar? You bought a new refrigerator and moved your old one into the garage to keep a few drinks cold or freeze your bait in. Old refrigerators, especially those bought before 1993, use more than twice as much electricity as a new ENERGY STAR rated model. What's more, refrigerants in those older appliances weaken over time and door seals start to leak, causing a decline in the performance.

CHEC offers members a $100 bill credit for turning in their energy-wasting, secondary refrigerators or freezers on Hatteras Island. In addition to a bill credit, we will come to your home, remove and recycle the unit for free!

To qualify, the refrigerator or freezer must be:

  • plugged in and working
  • a secondary unit (not your primary kitchen refrigerator)
  • a residential style refrigerator or freezer between 10 and 30 cubic feet
  • owned by the rebate recipient

This program in limited to up to two units per Hatteras Island address.
